Only a Messenger

I’m just a servant and happy to be so.  People want to follow someone or something they can see.  Someone who can make them feel better right away for they’ve suffered greatly in their separation from God.  He is the light.  He is our refuge and strength.  A very present help in times of trouble.  And yet, man does not choose to walk in His ways.  Many have never studied the Bible so there is much about God they do not know.  They’ve cherry picked Scripture from time to time throughout their lives but have never embarked on an in depth study of any sort.  Therefore they live in depression, worry, anxiety, fear, frustration, greed, lust, anger, jealousy and so forth.  In other words, they choose the darkness over the light.

Man was not created to walk alone but with God.  We chase after the temporary and ignore the eternal.  This is why it is so hard to get people to actually sit down and read the Bible.  All they know is what they see.  They do not understand that everything they are striving for today;  house, car, job, relationship, etc. has an expiration date.  It’s important to help people but if the only help you give them is based on what they see and what they want to hear then they will eventually run out of hope again.  Self help too is short lived.  For all we can offer in ourselves and through our resources is of the world and all that is of the world is temporary.  Thus we must make sure along with any financial help or advice we give that we also share the Gospel.  And then, we must share our testimony so they do not see us as more than what we truly are for we too are lost without Christ.  Make sure they understand you are only a messenger delivering the Good News of the Gospel.  Nothing more.  You are not their solution and not the one they should follow and put their hope in.  Tell them the truth.  Share with them the mess you were and are without Christ.  Be real.  Be true.  Be honest.  As for me in truth I’m a mess and I know it.  In fact I can be down right stupid at times and do the most idiotic things.  I can be nice and I can be not so nice.  I can be a good friend and I have also been known to be a selfish git on occasion.

I am in truth a million miles from perfect.  This is the state of any human.  We all struggle with good and evil.  Paul said it this way in Romans 7:15 – 20, “I do not understand what I do.  For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.  And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.  As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.  For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.  For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.  For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.”  And this is true of both you and I as well.  And this is why ego destroys us.  For it is only in humility can we see ourselves as who we truly are – lost sheep in need of a Savior.  Now Paul went on to say, “23 But I see another law at work in my body, warring against the law of my mind and holding me captive to the law of sin that dwells within me.  24 What a wretched man I am!  Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!  So then, with my mind I serve the law of God, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.”  See that — “With my mind I serve the law but with my flesh I serve the law of sin”.  Now, that’s sticky worthy.  We need a constant reminder of this truth.  In order to ‘feel’ better we must ‘think’ better and fill our mind with truth DAILY – the Word of God.

All that we see, smell and hear feeds the flesh.  A deliberate effort to step away from everything that entertains the flesh is required to find true and lasting peace.  We must focus on studying God’s Word and spend time alone in prayer.  Focusing the mind on God’s Word helps us to serve the law and not our flesh.  Serve God NOT Self.  This too is sticky worthy.  The law being the Word of God.  And when we cease serving flesh our spirit begins to communicate with God and the answers to our questions begin to flow. Only He knows what we should do in each and every situation.  For only God is pure and only God is powerful.  Man can twist, bend, combine and manipulate the things God put into the Universe but man cannot create anything new in itself and he cannot add one day to his life.  God is sovereign.  Another human might be able to help someone feel better for a short while but that joy is fleeting.  If the person does not get in the Word of God, study for themselves and apply it to their lives then their mind will never find lasting peace.  Only the Bible has the power to renew the mind.  It is the mind of God and Jesus is the scarlet thread which flows from Genesis to Revelations.  Jesus is the message of the Gospel.  He is the answer to every problem we will ever face.  And no matter who you choose to follow God will not speak to them about your life.  This is what having a personal relationship means.  It does not mean you live your life your way and God gives you pass.  You must study His Word and apply his teachings to your life if you wish to hear from Him.  No one can do that for you.  Thus we are not to put anyone between us and Christ.  God created you and He alone can sustain you for all eternity. God and only God can offer you lasting stability.  And we can only come to the Father through His son for Jesus is our Savior.

Focusing on God in the midst of a storm has been the answer to storm survival from the beginning of time. But man has always been to use Moses words, ‘a stiff necked people’.  Yes, we are just as stubborn today.  We’d rather continue to suffer than get in the Word daily and apply it to our lives. Yet, God will not be used.  There must be a true desire to know Him and learn his ways before He will speak no matter how big the storm in your life has become.  Therefore we must keep pointing everyone to the Gospel. Any and all human answers and solutions will be short lived. All worldly things — the help and advice of men expire. You are simply a messenger. No human is worthy to be followed. When we follow humans they eventually lead us astray or disappoint us for all are flawed. Yes, each of us have our issues and token sins that we struggle with daily. Putting your hope in a human is setting them up as an idol in your life. When they fall you fall. All hope, trust and faith must remain in Christ and Christ alone.
